Ash in His Hands
Some fires don’t go out. They learn how to burn inside you.
The wildfire erased every road home.
By the time the smoke closed around me, I had a stolen black key in my pocket, a list of names I was never meant to see, and no way out of the burning forest.
Then Elias found me.
He smells of gasoline and cold water. He knows what I took from the ranger station. He knows where the flames will move before they move. And every path he offers leads deeper underground, toward iron doors, buried voices, and a route prepared long before I understood I was being hunted.
Elias calls it survival when he covers my mouth. Control when he decides when I breathe. Mercy when he teaches my body to crave the same hands my mind knows should terrify me.
If I fight him, the fire will take me.
If I surrender, I may survive long enough to become exactly what they chose me for.
Because Elias was never there to save me.
He was there to make sure I opened the door.
